PITTSBURG, Kan. — Thanks to food and beverage enthusiasts in the area, community members can enjoy German festivities this month without buying plane ticket.
This Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m., the Mirza Shriners are inviting the public to taste beers, eat delicious food and take home a collectible mug for $25. The beer festival will take place at the Shriner’s Temple at 110 W. 5th Street in Pittsburg. The party will have entertainment, games and an authentic German outfit contest.
The 5th Annual Oktoberfest will take place 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Drop the H, 107 E. Rose. Owner Mark McClain said over the years he has seen more and more people show up at the event in traditional German attire such as lederhosen and dirdnl.
“It gives me great pleasure to see each and every year a greater number of people showing up in traditional garb,” he said. “We’re almost at the tipping point now where, as we get more people getting into the spirit things and showing up in the traditional garb, it takes on a whole new level of fun and festivity.”
The event will feature a special Pilsner and German-style charcuterie plate with sausage, pretzel, potato salad and more. Festhaus Musikanten, a Kansas City band, will play German folk music.
McClain said the celebration also coincides with the time of year he first opened the brewery.
From 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, Bushel and a Peck, 208 E. Buffalo St. In Girard will host an Octoberfest event with a German food menu complete with pretzels, schnitzel, pierogies and more. The event is a collaboration with TOAST, a restaurant in Pittsburg. Games for both children and adults will be available for patrons.
