Anita “Sue” Johnson

Anita “Sue” Johnson, 75, formerly of Frontenac, Kansas, passed away at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, at Homestead Assisted Living in Girard, Kansas.

She was born Aug. 25, 1949, at Hallowell, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence “Pete” and Vestal (Wood) Groves. She graduated from Oswego High School in 1967. After high school, she graduated from Labette Community College in 1970. On Feb. 14, 1970, she was united in marriage to Gerald Johnson, they later divorced.

Sue worked at the American State Bank of Oswego, the Exchange State Bank in St. Paul for 30 years, Clinton Missouri Bank from 2002 to 2005, and retired as the Executive Assistant to the Vice President in 2005 from the First State Bank in Joplin, Missouri. Membership was held in the First Christian Church in Pittsburg and TOPS. She was a volunteer at the gift shop at Mt. Carmel and for Angels Among Us. Former membership had also been held in the Hallowell Methodist Church, United Chapel, and the Oswego Methodist Church. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, spending time with grandchildren and cross-stitching.

Sue is survived by a son, James Johnson and his wife, Aimee of St. Augustine, Florida; a daughter, Miranda Johnson and her husband, Jerry of rural Pittsburg, Kansas; a sister, Beth Ashmore of Pittsburg; six grandchildren, Katie, Gabriel, Tessa, Bennett, Anna, and Caleb; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Franklin “Tinky Groves, and a sister, Bonita Price.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the First Christian Church, followed by an 11 a.m. service at the church with Rev. Dustin Morris and Chaplain Randy Beaman officiating. Burial will follow in the McKee Cemetery, north of Hallowell, Kansas.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either Angels Among Us, Harry Hynes Hospice or the First Christian Church.
