Larry Gene Sandberg

Larry Gene Sandberg, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Feb. 2, 2025, at Mercy hospital in Pittsburg, KS. Larry was born on Aug. 24, 1941 to his mother, Dorothy Sandberg in rural Columbus, KS. Larry attended Columbus High School and graduated in 1960. He made a career with the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company where he worked for 21 years and retired from in 1994. He married Janet Simone Dec. of 1961, and together they built a life full of love and cherished memories in her short time. After Janet’s passing Larry was blessed to spend his later years with his wife Karen Jones, whom he married on Dec. 30, 2009. He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Sandberg; his children, Lisa Nutt and Dwayne, Randy Sandberg and Brenda, Michelle Shipley and Mike, and David Schoonover; and his eight grandchildren, Seth Nutt and Kirbie, Caleb Nutt and Taylor, Ashlyn Broce and Trent, Shae Sandberg and Cheyenne, Lasey Sandberg and partner Logan Dean, Mallory Misenhelter and Garrett, Grethen Shipley, and Camryn Schoonover. He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren Korbyn Howard, Kruz Howard, Karter Howard, Rynlee Broce, Giuliana Nutt, McCoy Nutt, Creed Sandberg, Kennedy Misenhelter and Brady Misenhelter. Larry had a deep love for sports and followed KU and Pittsburg State as well as the Kansas City Chiefs. He loved fishing, spending time at the lake, and was an avid bowler - he took great pride in achieving a perfect 300 game. Whether at the lanes, on the water, or in the stands he found great joy in competition and the memories made. You could always catch him at Bo’s 1 Stop enjoying coffee amongst friends. Although his greatest joy in life was his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Sandberg, and his first wife, Janet Sandberg. Larry’s life was characterized by love and dedication to his family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday Feb. 6, 2025, at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS with Bo Boulware officiating. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. Family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 5, 2025, at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS; friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the SEK Humane Society. Friends may drop off or mail memorials to Bath-Naylor Funeral Home 522 S.
