PITTSBURG -- More than 50 Pittsburg Middle School students have been working and rehearsing since last fall and on Thursday, the curtain finally came up on “Seussical the Musical.” Under the direction of Breana Clark, director of the Theater Program at Pittsburg High School, the production combines some classic Dr. Seuss tales to delight audiences of all ages. On Thursday afternoon, the performance was dedicated to grade school students, some potentially tough critics when it comes to Dr. Seuss stories.
Thursday and Friday nights, however, the community is welcome. Each performance begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.
PHS seniors Chloe Costello and Allison Frech have been assisting Clark with choreography for the production. They said the work the young performers have put into the production is impressive.
“Auditions were in October and then rehearsals began,” said Costello. “The students rehearsed once or twice a week after school.”
It has been a labor of love.
“Working with them has been a joy,” said Frech. “They have a lot of energy.”
“Seussical the Musical” was written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Most of the plot was taken from the popular Dr. Seuss books, “Horton Hears a Who,” “Gertrude McFuzz,” and “Horton Hatches an Egg.”
The musical made its debut on Broadway in 2000. It has become a popular production for schools and regional theaters.
