Pittsburg housing projects receive funding


PITTSBURG, Kan. – Two housing projects in Pittsburg were awarded federal grant funds and tax credits through the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC), which will go toward 14 new multi-family rental units and 12 new single-family homes in Pittsburg. 

 “We are excited that the KHRC has chosen to invest in Pittsburg,” said City of Pittsburg Community Development & Housing Director Kim Froman. “These programs are extremely competitive and only 20 projects were chosen during this round of funding.” 

Locally-owned development team DVLP received $840,000 in MIH-ARPA grant funds and $420,000 in tax credits for the Smithsonian Apartments project located at 9th and Broadway in downtown Pittsburg. This development will result in 14 new rental units. 

The Smithsonian is one of three historic buildings currently being renovated by DVLP, which will together result in 27 new apartments along with corporate office spaces in the downtown district. Target date of completion for the Smithsonian Apartments is Spring of 2024.   

 “Anyone who has renovated an old building understands the costs versus building new,” says DVLP Partner Quentin Holmes. “This award will allow us to continue on our path to creating quality housing for those that choose Pittsburg. The Smith Clinic was saved from a fire in 2021 thanks to the Pittsburg Fire Department and it deserves to be brought back to life.”   

3P Construction Services was awarded $360,000 in tax credits for their Pittsburg housing project Sunflower Estates, which will include 12 new single-family homes. The neighborhood is expected to begin construction in early 2024. 3P Construction Services also manages the Villas at Creekside neighborhood located along East 4th Street that features maintenance-free condos and single-level villas in a gated community setting. 

“Pittsburg needs more homes to meet the demand of our growing community from affordable housing all the way to high-end,” said Froman. “These projects will help the city meet the need for moderate-income housing for young professionals, university grads, families, and empty nesters who want to build a life here.”

Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) is a self-supporting, nonprofit, public corporation that serves as the primary administrator of federal housing programs for the state of Kansas. The KHRC administers several programs, including the Moderate Income Housing American Rescue Plan Act (MIH-ARPA) funding and Kansas Housing Investor Tax Credit (KHITC) program, which were awarded to Pittsburg projects.
